Historical Perspective

Mary Baker Eddy was born in Bow, New Hampshire in 1821. Following the effects of a serious accident in 1866, she was healed instantaneously after reading the story of one of Jesus’ healings in the Bible. She then devoted the rest of her life to discover the divine Science of the Master’s healings that contributed to her remarkable recovery.

A distinctive part of Christian Science is its healing of physical disease as well as sin, by spiritual means alone.

In 1875 Mary Baker Eddy first published the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Her book is now published in 17 languages and English Braille.

Science and Health was voted by the National Book Association as “one of 75 books by women whose words have changed the world”. Christian Science churches are now found in over 70 countries around the world, with its members coming from over 130 countries.

Christian Science in Nova Scotia

Christian Science was first introduced in Nova Scotia in 1896 by a student who was a member of the Primary Class taught by Mary Baker Eddy in 1889.

Two of Mrs. Eddy’s students came to Halifax as Christian Science teachers: Julie Bartlett in 1887 and Clara Shannon in 1901.

A Christian Science Society was formed in Halifax on April 2, 1901. Services were first held in Halifax in 1892, at 106 Granville Street.

On June 23, 1905, the Society reorganized to become First Church of Christ Scientist, Halifax. Almost immediately after, the property at the corner of South Park and Inglis Streets, formerly a Methodist day school, was purchased for the new church. The first service was held in Halifax in 1905.

In 2019 the property at South Park and Inglis Street was sold and the Church reorganized to become the Christian Science Society, Halifax offering regular Sunday Services and Wednesday evening meetings via Zoom.
